The Need

One in every six middle school children in the U.S will be bullied this year. I was in the 6th grade when I was bullied, but instead of being a victim, I became stronger. I became an advocate and a champion, and I became determined to help others.

I created Positive Pocket because I wanted to help others who are going through what I went through, as well as situations much worse, and to give them an anchor as to which they can use to help them get through their difficult times, reminding them that they matter and make a difference.

Positive Pocket is creates a package to send out to schools all around the nation. It includes ready-to-use curriculum and materials that any teacher or counselor can use in their class or school. It educates students on how they can control their self-esteem, self-confidence, and influence them on the importance of standing up for themselves and each other. Kits are packaged and sold on a classroom, school, or district basis. Through this program, our goal is to educate kids about anti-bullying and self-worth.

My Story

I created Positive Pocket in 2011 in response to a bullying incident which left me feeling sad, angry, embarrassed, upset, and anxious. That night, I went on the computer, typed up some of my favorite positive sayings and included some pictures that I liked – ones that made me feel good. I printed them out, put clear tape over it so they wouldn’t rip, and placed them in my jean pocket. The next day, when I was feeling anxious or down, I discretely pulled out my card, read it to myself to remind myself that I’m alright, and placed it back in my pocket. Do you know what? It worked! I had rediscovered my strength, and self-confidence within me! I started to create more cards, and gave them out to family and friends, as well as created a website so that others could empower themselves. Now, in 2013, I’m 14 years old, and Positive Pocket serves as an anchor to help kids and adults who suffer from the negative effects of bullying, low self-esteem, self-confidence, and other social/emotional issues.

Creating Positive Pocket has been a wonderful journey for me. I am especially proud of winning the National title for the Saunders Scholar Bright Ideas Competition for the Young Entrepreneurs Academy when I was in 7th grade, when I created it. I want make Positive Pocket available to schoolchildren all over the country because we need it now more than ever.
